Both outputs are alway live on the DirecTV receivers. you need however to configure the Onkyo to get the audio from the optical input. I recently upgraded to 4K with the Genie and UHD mini's. When I had my 4k Samsung TV installed I started getting audio dropouts for about 1 second every 5 minutes. Very annoying.

The dropouts happen every 20 minutes. Like clockwork. Lasting about 5 seconds. For the most part it's not a major problem, just annoying, until a couple of nights ago when the sound went away and didn't come back until we turned the TV off and back on. When the dropout begins, there's an audible click from the Onkyo receiver and the "Dolby Digital" display on the Onkyo front panel disappears, as well as the tiny red "Dolby" signal indicator. When the audio comes back, so do the indicators on the Onkyo front panel.

The audio codec "skips", and the sound drops out. You can switch from Dolby Digital to "Off" on your DirecTV receiver - and you will find that these dropouts practically disappear (they are still there but drastically reduced so as to be almost inaudible - I doubt I would have noticed them at all had I not known where to look).
