Onkyo's Pure Direct mode is a legit bypass circuit. It shuts down not only tone controls but also all the onboard DAC's and iPod integration features. Everyone's tossing in opinions, without even knowing what the tx-8050 is.

When I tried switching the Pure Audio and Direct modes on and compared them to the plain Stereo mode of my Onkyo stereo receiver, I didn't hear much of a difference, if any at all. I'm coming from a cheap Yamaha receiver to the Onkyo tx-nr656. I always listened to the Yamaha in straight mode for Blurays since I wanted pure audio without any dsp. On the Onkyo it seems to have a lot of listening modes though they don't really seem like dsp. The receiver will auto switch when playing a bluray.
