Apologies the laptop is an Inspiron 15R N5110. Unfortunately this did not solve the problem. I have now deleted the Dell audio driver, ran ccleaner to clean the registry and rebooted the laptop - windows then found and installed an audio driver. I ran dell diagnostics and this then allowed me to run the full set of tests which all passed.
