The SUB-1200 utilizes a bass reflex design with a 12" front-firing driver and a down-firing port. It's certainly not an imposing unit, measuring just 16.75"x16.5"x17.75" (HWD) and weighing a mere 42lbs. The stated frequency response is 25Hz-140Hz, while the amp is listed as 120 watts RMS. The Dayton's frequency range does go down a bit more. Although both are 12 inch subwoofers, the Dayton's definitely does a better job. After setting it up and testing out the sound with different 4K movies with Dolby Atmos or DTS:X, the difference was considerable.

Sub: Dayton Audio Sub 1200 Wiring is 12 AWG stranded copper, max length run ~ 25 ft. Room size is 10x13, so it's on the small side of things. Crossover/LFE was set to 100 HZ on the Denon, with sub crossover left wide open. Audyssey was run after setting things up, only to find my coax cable was bad (brand new, center conductor dead).

The only real concession is that these subwoofers are really big and heavy, but you only have to deal with that once when you place it. And how do they sound? Well, the 1200 sounds great with music, where the idea is for the subwoofer to kind of fill in the bass without actually being distinctly noticeable, which this seemed to do perfectly.

If I understand correctly, clipping is likely to damage the driver even at low frequencies, so it is not simply a matter of finding an amp that does not have too much power (I would also expect an amp maxed out would need some recuperation time after being pushed to its limit, so there would be some type of audible drop-out effect).
