About ten minutes into a Cubase session, crackling sounds start to occur during playback. They sound as if there is interference on my amplifier-speaker combination, but when I switch to another audio source on my PC (like YouTube), there is no problem. When I close Cubase and then restart the session, everything is OK.

The worst one is crackling when record is enabled on any VST instrument. We look at the performance metre, and it is red at the end, when using only 1 recorded instrument. When record is disabled, real-time peak goes to the bottom, but average is at half-way. The odd thing is that the CPU usage in task manager is only at ~8% on an i9 9900k.

1. The crackling noise is due to insufficient CPU usage. 2. CPU will overload more easily on certain presets with more effects and/or dual amp setting. 3. Lower Buffer Size and/or higher Sample Rate setting will also cause higher CPU load. 4. Having other applications running will eat up the CPU usage as well, resulting higher CPU usage.

Go to Device Setup --> VST Audio System (left side of the window) Check the ASIO Driver set on the right side of the window. It should be your Sound Card. Usually, when you haven't set this, it's by default on "Asio Direct X Full Duplex Audio", but the latency is very high. Change it to your Sound Card and everything should be ok.
