The design of the amplifier was inspired by the work done by O.H. Schade of RCA in 1938, P.Millet and D. Berning with their work on using TV tubes from the 60’s and designing them into audio power amplifiers. I decided on a design that used all Compactron tubes because they were cheap, thus a True Compactron Tube Amp design.

With the compactron design you will be stuck with NOS tubes and probably not a lot of choices. My experience with tubes that were designed for horizontal deflection in TVs is that they are not really suitable for anything else. They can be used for audio, but they don't seem to perform as well as ones designed for audio.

The 12 pin Compactron tubes were designed for TV sets. Some of the bigger sweep tubes were used in big audio amps lick the Macintosh MI-350. Some versions were used to near extinction in ham and CB linear amplifiers. Those tubes are expensive today.

Compactrons and what they were used for: 11AR11 twin pentode (both semi-remote cutoff), mixer and IF amp 8B10 twin triode - twin diode, local oscillator, first audio amp, and detector/AVC diode. Second diode grounded. 38HK7 pentode diode, audio output amp and power rectifier. See notes below the diagram.

This class of tubes was intended to rival the transistor which started to replace vacuum tubes. With the 12 pins more systems could be integrated into a single bulb.
