Rega RP8 vs Clearaudio Concept - Audiogon Discussion Forum

Rega has a really good rep, a lot of which goes back when in the face of CD they decided to take a risk on machining for a really good tone arm. The result was the RB300, an arm that all by itself established Rega in the Analog Hall of Fame. Its probably a really good table. Especially if you prefer fast and light over full and rich.

i believe that you will hear a greater bass weight with the clearaudio. regas tend to be precise with great p.r.a.t. but not the deepest bass becasue their philosophy is not to push the table beyond what it does well. this is not to say that the clearaudio will not do bass well, but it will put emphasis on what its designers wanted to acheive. in …

To me the Rega is a pain if you want to use a non-rega cartridge...you need to un screw the tonearm, remove it, and add a spacer to the base. The Clearaudio appears to be easier to use diferent cartridges (you won't have to take the tonearm off). I use a Musical Surroundings Phonomena II and I think it is a fantastic Phono Stage for the money.

I have heard both and I have owned a Rega P5, a P3-24, and a RP-6 in the past. I do not own a Rega anymore but I have a Clearaudio Ovation with the Magnify tonearm. Try to listen to both and make up your own mind. My opinion is that Clearaudio makes better turntables in every respect, resolution, speed stability, noise floor and looks.

Both are highly respected brands, and the Clearaudio might be a slightly easier going sound. A bit more compact too if I’m remembering correctly, but it might just be the neat styling. However the cartridge will make quite a big difference too. The Rega will probably have more ‘drive’ and excitement.

Rega is very much a 'prestige' brand for the dealer, given the still modest level of TT sales, it is very difficult for him to justify stocking all the options. Makes it difficult I know, you can try the Rega for yourself but might have to 'take a punt' on the Clearaudio setup.
