Review: Clearaudio Maestro Cartridge

While the data sheet that comes with the Maestro recommends 220 pF – 270 pF I presume this means inclusive of the cable capacitance but this is not stated. The AF allows for loading at 50 pF increments up to 600 pF. I found 150 to be just a little too lean and 250 just a little too closed in. At 200 pF in my system the balance was very good indeed.

Reviews Clearaudio Maestro Wood phono cartridge This $1000 cartridge blurs the performance line between moving coil and moving magnet designs and may be the most balanced MM cartridge we’ve heard.

Throughout my listening sessions the Maestro tracked very cleanly. Tonally it travels straight down the rich and wide middle of the sonic spectrum. Its inherent midrange energy and overall balance bring symphonic recordings to life, unifying each section of the orchestra into the greater whole of the ensemble.

The Maestro V2 reproduced male voices particularly well: Its overall warmth was accompanied by the speed necessary to prevent its sound from deteriorating into baritone mud. Even Capitol's great series of recordings by guitarist Laurindo Almeida fared well—with these LPs, MCs usually have it all over MMs.

    - I read good reviews of the Clearaudio Virtuoso, and the Maestro is a step up, has a boron cantilever, one-piece construction (wood of course), and a stylus shape borrowed from Clearaudio’s more expensive MCs – which I had hoped would give me the same relief from inner-track gremlins as the 440mla.
