From the opening bars of the 13th sonata ("quasi una fantasia"), Arrau displays incredible energy and absolute authority that carry straight through to the Les Adieux, which closes the program. There's an aggressiveness to his attack combined with complete keyboard mastery that's simply thrilling to watch.

Beethoven: Violin Sonatas/Grumiaux/Arrau - Classics Today

Because Arrau makes no attempt to match his partner’s phrases, the music’s conversational character suffers, such as in the Spring Sonata’s first-movement exposition and static, inflexible slow movement.

The rhetorical touches characterizing Arrau’s Philips recordings of Beethoven’s Op. 78 and Op. 110 sonatas manifest themselves less extremely in his late-1950s EMI studio traversals. As a result, the F-sharp sonata’s finale makes a more animated impression, if not on the humorous level conveyed by Kempff’s caustic phrasing or Gould’s ...

I bought Claudio Arrau after watching him playing on Youtube and reading some good reviews about him. The beauty of Beethoven Pno music throught Claudio Arrau is so deep that I hardly find a word to describe it. We have 2 DVD recorded in 1970 and 1977 (one black and one in colour) with eight Sonatas (some with all 3mvts). I like all.

In general, Arrau's playing is more cautious than before, and the tempi are generally slower than before. (Op. 31.1 is particularly cautious in comparison with his earlier version). There is some compensation, I feel, for the technical decline, inasmuch as Arrau allows himself a bit more interpretive license than he did on the earlier set.

Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2020 Verified Purchase Claudio Arrau was one of the great pianists of the 20th century, and was particularly noted as a Beethoven interpreter. This cycle dates from the 1960's, and was originally made for Philips, but Decca-Universal has now thankfully re-released it in a bargain, space-saving box.

To ears reared on Pollini, Arrau's Beethoven can take some time getting used to, in good part due to the deliberate tempos he often chooses. But it's incredibly musical stuff worth all that effort, even if some of the last five sonatas don't appear as grand as elsewhere.
