The Cary CD-500 replaced a very good $1800 Arcam Diva Cd-92 that was showing it's 11 years age. The difference in playback is immediately noticeable. Where the Arcam was very forward, a little bright and in your face, the Cary CD-500 tames all those characteristics. The soundstage is moved back 5 rows or so and it is much taller and slightly wider.

The Cary CD-500 is not exactly lean, but it does fall into the "detailed" category of players. Here "clean and clear" is more obvious than "richness or elegance." A cello will sound more like its strings than its box. Acoustic guitar will sound a bit thinner and more snappy. The sound is more forward and direct than recessed and full-blooded.

Both the 303T and 306 have been discontinued. Confirmed directly with Cary Audio marketing. I did express my displeasure. The economy, while not ideal, has nothing to do with this. I'd point to all of the uber hi-end digital products coming out as evidence. Cary Audio has gone several years without Dennis Had and now the party is over.

Hi, I owned the cary cd-500,I,m sorry gentlemen, the cary was the worst sounding unit me and the wife ever experienced, the sound stage seemed cluttered and the treble was analitical big time, bass was lean sounding as well, thou the unit had clarity going for it,we quickly sold it and waiting for delivery of the Ayon 2s player, happy listening!
