The Cary 308 sounds like the stage is in front of you with the musicians performing live. The key to this is to leave it on all the time. I do this with all my CDP's and they sound substantially better. The Cary also has HDCD processing for the better HDCD-20 bit CD's. It has 24/96 upsampling, selectable on the fly from the remote or front panel.

I would say in all seriousness, the 308 is a better sounding player than the XA7ES. So feeling great about my purchase, I continue to listen and continue to be impressed. The player has well over 200 hours on it now and sounds even better. Something I have enjoyed as well is the HDCD playback. I never realized how many HDCD discs I actually owned.

The 308 produces a large soundstage with excellent dynamics and clarity. It's slightly more forward than the 306/200 but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. So how does it compare to the 306/200?

The CD-308 is not an entry-level player. It has massive build quality, and uses Burr-Brown 24/96 It is for CDs only. because these are on DVD-V format, nor will it play SACD or DVD-A. It comes with a "typical" remote control with all the functions. Easy to hold and use, but remotes are not my thing. The Listening I tested the Cary system with

The CD-308 also has RCA analog outs only, no balanced XLR. It's Cary's "entry" CD player after all and I believe Cary decided to put their best effort into making this little box sound great instead of loading it up with features. In my opinion, it sounds better than "entry" at a …
