    There might be a hardware reason 60D does not show audio levels while recording. It's hard to understand why else the meters would disappear when you need to see them. The live histogram and level go away as well. I wouldn't hold your breath awaiting a software hack, although Magic Lantern did it for the 5D mkII and is working on one for the T2i.
