When using DirectX Audio output, VLC is able to output Dolby and DTS lossy audio to external decoder. But HD audio tracks, such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD-MA are not managed by VLC with DirectX Audio output. Some soundcards need to use the DirectX Audio output to send the bitstream to external decoder, because it does not work with default output.

VLC does indeed support audio bitstream passthrough. Just go to Tools/Preferences, and select "Show Settings/All" in order to see the Advanced Settings. Then go to Audio and select Use S/PDIF when available. Just wanted to make sure nobody else is going to give up on VLC when it was one of the first products to support this properly! Report abuse

Last time I looked VLC doesn't support bitstreaming of HD Audio codecs therefore no amount of tweaking will get it working. VLC runs on its own propietary codecs, therefore the installation of LAV will have no effect. In response to your first question - try XBMC it can bitstream both and there is no need for additional codec installations.
