Just a tip - The 650BD is actually manufactured by Oppo's parent company, and is basically the Oppo BDP-80 in a different exterior packaging. For this reason, it is pointless to pay double for the same player, more than the BDP-83, and almost all the way to the BDP-83SE which is an audiophile CD player rated to compete with units in the $2-3k+ price range.

The Cambridge Audio 650BD at 700.00 has a hard time matching the Oppo BDP-83 at 500.00. At the same time, one poster mentions a list of "quibbles" about the Oppo BDP-83--assuming these are valid, have they been addressed in an update?

How important is video and analogue audio ? The 650BD doesn't have the video processing capability of the Oppo-83. The Oppo 83 uses an ABT video post processor, has a dedicated stereo DAC/phono output and uses higher spec DAC's for both stereo and MC. The 650bd/Oppo-80 both rely on Mediatek for video processing and share the same DAC.

But Oppo are a manufacturer who sell through their online shop - it'd be difficult to sell MR from there and stay on the good side on the BDA. The Cambridge was an all around fine player but the Modwright Oppo was slightly more detailed and certainly possessed a deeper, wetter soundstage, being more palpable. I did prefer the Cambridge in the lower range being faster and more articulate.
