Cambridge Audio Azur 640A draws a wide and deep three-dimensional scene; solo violin sounds nice. The muting of high-frequency tails is slow and smooth. The amplifier has the unique for budget equipment quality - you want to listen to classics in its performance.

The 640A is significantly brighter in the vocals. There is also more punch to the mid-bass, the low frequency range doesn't go as deep as the NAD. The observations about bass were confirmed by some measurements of playing pink noise through the system. The 640A dropped more than 8dB at 25 Hz (compared to 32 Hz), while the NAD only dropped 2dB.

All-in-all, the Cambridge Audio Azur 640a is a complete bargain. Having also heard the Creek, which is itself a great unit, I can not justify spending the extra $300 (400 if you want a remote) simply because it is a Creek. The Cambridge holds its own against integrateds I've come across costing well over three times the 640a's $499.00 MSRP.

"Cambridge Audio has a decent track record when it comes to budget kit. However, nothing the company has done in recent years suggested it could produce something as polished as the Azur 640A integrated. This is a fabulous all-rounder, which comes closer to being all things to all people than just about anything else at this price level.

Representatives of two price groups surprisingly met in the amplifier Cambridge Audio Azur 740A. It has the same power supply and controls as in the older 840th model, and the power amplifier circuit is a modified version of the one being used in the amplifiers of 540/640 series.
