I purchased a Cambridge 840A (v1) integrated amp off Audiogon a couple years ago. It works fine and sounds great, except the volume control knob is dangerously unreliable. Frequently, no matter which direction I turn the knob, the volume will mostly go up (like five steps up, one step down). No problems when using the remote.

Repair your Cambridge Audio 840E volume contol issues. Many people with Cambridge Audio 840E (and I think 840A) preamps have reported strange volume behavior where the volume levels will suddenly change. Recall that these are the pre-amps with the relay controlled discrete resistor ladders and the Terrapin modules.

The display on the 840 read -35 at a reasonable volume, I had the volume on the 740 at around -25 to get around the same level. I have no idea if the display actually means anything other being an indication. I was quite surprised, with the comparison . Both these amps have the signature “Cambridge Audio Sound”.

COMPARO: Cambridge 840 series vs. their latest 851 series

The 840A and 851A both claim a power output of 120 watts per channel into an 8-ohm load and 200 watts per channel into a 4-ohm load – enough for all but the most inefficient speakers. Either will drive a pair of Magnepan 1.7s to modest level with decent grip, but the newer amplifier does a better job, where the 840A seems to struggle a bit.

My 840a also suffered from this common volume control issue. I only used the remote for years (the physical control would send the volume shooting up for no reason if touched) then it degraded the sound even more (loss of/muffled sound) and I was looking to repair/replace. Anyway, after some research I fixed it for pennies.
