The 740C uses the same upsampling technology as the top-of-the-range 840C, now married to dual Wolfson WM8740 24-bit DACs with a newly developed Bessel implementation of Cambridge's proprietary virtual earth balanced filtering. The 740C incorporates the same 32-bit DSP as the 840C and upsamples to full 24-bit 384 kHz.

Cambridge introduced this a year or so ago in the Azur 840C player, and cajoled it into the cheaper 740C thanks to a few small economies in the DAC department and the omission of balanced output.

The 740C's SRP is too high for a machine with those specs (and doesn't look that much better than the 640C V2 on paper, DAC features aside), and the 840C at $375 more for a mere DAC change and XLR output is not worth it IMO. And no offense, but 1 good review from a major publication shouldn't influence your opinion.

The filter upsamples the 44.1kHz/16-bit audio from the CD (or external source) to 384kHz/24-bit. Dual Analog Devices 24-bit DACs convert the digital data to analog signals differentially. That is, the left and right channels are each split in the digital domain to create balanced signals, and converted to analog with two DACs per channel (one for each phase of the balanced signal).
