The Cambridge Audio Azur 650C is one of the best budget CDPs I've ever heard. It only plays CDs & it plays it well. The pace, rhythm & timing (P.R.A.T.) of the CA 650C is evidently better than the older CA 640C CDP. The soundstage feels very realistic, 3 dimensional & less clinical than the earlier CA 640C CDP was plagued with.

The 650C has deeper and better defined bass, very neutral mids ( perhaps a tad clinical ), and very detailed high end, ( however, I do not find too bright or harsh at all ). The unit is very quite in operation and seems very well built. The remote is …

The sound of Cambridge Audio Azur 650C impresses at a glance. Voices are rich and quite natural, voice sibilants are extremely natural. MIDs are very transparent and open. This time the developers managed to find the best balance between musicality and scrupulous attitude to detail. At the same time, the sound is very dynamic.

But arguably the most important development is the introduction of an entirely new in-house designed servo solution. Whereas many 'comparable' CD players utilize an inferior CD/DVD-ROM derived drive, the 650C takes full advantage of Cambridge Audio's audio-only, CD transport which is coupled to a new highly sophisticated S3 Custom CD Servo.

The power supply of the 650C employs a toroidal transformer, while its disc transport is coupled to what Cambridge calls its ‘S3 Custom CD Servo controller’. It would be churlish to criticise anything about the package on offer here, given the price of the 650C. It comes with a sensibly designed remote handset and the player even displays CD Text.

there are differences as you move up the cambridge line--the 740, 640 and 650, as well as the DACMagic appear to use the same DACs, but the 740 and the DACMagic are upsampling, which will makes an audible difference, while the 650 allegedly improves on the 640 by using some sort of new "filtering topography" and a better transport mechanism.
