The CAL Icon Mk II has plenty of driving bass rhythm that is missing from the other players I listened to. The bass isn't sloppy or muddy - it seems pretty tight and …

The IconM2PB harkens to a better time. Its jacks are well-spaced, so you can go hog wild with your after-market powercords and interconnects. It loads relatively quickly. It has all four time modes. It does not make noise or generate heat. It does not hog rack space.

A sample of the CAL Icon Mk.II arrived for me to review for The Abso!ute Sound (footnote 2). I was mightily impressed. Yes, the player had quite a few colorations, most notably a warm and bloated midbass, a powerful but somewhat loose bottom end, and a forward midrange that was quite noticeable on vocals and woodwinds.

In complete honesty, the Icon is one of the smoothest and most detailed players in its price range. Against the Camelot transport and dac, it held its own with the speakers. Only with my Sennheisers were the slight differences revealed--a sound that does not emanate as completely from silence, and a slight lack of overall musicality.

Although it's a bit long in the tooth, the Icon Mk.II is still my favorite CD player under $1000—colorations and all. The Power Boss upgrade, however, offers a significant improvement in sound quality compared with the stock player, even on nonHDCD recordings. Its HDCD performance is better still.

I had the Cal Icon Mk 2 HDCD with powerboss for years and loved it. I replaced it with an Ayre Cx7eMP which is in another league. The Ayre will be my last CD player purchase. Great player and company and their upgrades are worth it when they make them available.

California Audio Labs ICON MkII CD Player – SkyFi Audio

California Audio Labs ICON MkII CD Player $0 Wonderful second generation CD player from CAL from the mid 90's. Highly regarded and well reviewed. Fully tested and working perfectly. Display is bright and clear, and the front panel is perfect. There are a few typical scuffs on the top cover, but nothing major.

California Audio Labs Tercet Mk.III CD player. At $1295, the Tercet Mk.III represents a step up from CAL's $750 Icon, which I enthusiastically recommended back in April 1990 (Vol.13 No 4, footnote 1). Externally, with the exception of a wider and slightly thicker front panel, it appears to be a carbon copy of that unit.
