the cal dx-1. It just wasn't there. Has good bass extersion nice sound stagging, the human voice can come across a little cold at times. Depends on the cd. It is more for rock and jazz, classical doesn't seem as pleasing on this player. Similar Products Used: Orginally had a cheap sony player. Have listened to the krell 250cd and 300cd

The DX-1 enjoyed smooth sailing on the test bench. Its frequency response was extremely flat (much flatter than that of any moving-coil cartridge we know of, by the way), channel separation exceeded 70 dB across the audio band, and both noise and distortion were very low.

an Audio Enthusiast. I recently compared this unit with three other players; the Sony Xa-20es, CAL DX-2, and Parasound cdp-1000. I found The Dx-1 to be a solid mid-fi player. Its strengths seemed to be a warm rich midrange presentation and bass. The Dx-1 did a great job of not sounding like a stereo; it really made music.

California Audio Labs DX-1 Hello, My California Audio Labs DX-1 CD player is only a budget player but sounds natural and detailed. It has developed a strange fault , it plays a couple of cd's perfectly then it freezes totally. Give it a rest (for some days even) and it plays again. What can this be? the tubes maybe? Any idea most welcome,

It's basic black, with a thick, anodized faceplate and BMW-ish black-on-orange backlit LCD display. The faceplate treatment is a little unusual, though, and quite striking. It's softly sculpted with an upside-down trapezoidal motif, which is machined into the faceplate and mirrored in the disc drawer's shape.

I had a Marantz CD-63SE for quite some time, and I tell you, this CAL DX-1 is a much better built player, with what I think is a more natural sound. It has a nice IEC power cord, a robust CD mechanism, a sealed transformer, fully discrete output (NO OP-AMPS!), a thick plate across the inside that holds the mechanism above the circuit board.
