GPU drivers, audio drivers, etc.? Try this: launch the game, let it play until the point where you lose the sound, alt-tab and look if your audio device has changed. If so, switch it back to the one you use. If this keeps happening, you can disable all audio devices before playing Borderlands and leaving only the one you will use for the game.
