Through Bluetooth and the iPhone, shuttling with the COMAND knob/display shows ‘track+’ for a few seconds, then displays track info. These delays makes shuttling music the kind of thing that car accidents are made of. Very disappointing performance at the least.

I've tried this solution and, after reconnecting, the audio continues to pause after a few minutes. I've tried across multiple apps (spotify, google podcasts) and multiple devices (2 different cars, 1 bluetooth speaker, 1 set of bluetooth ear buds).

On the iPhone go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings. This will reset Bluetooth, but will also remove saved wi-fi passwords. After doing that, put the car into discovery/pairing mode, then turn the phone on, open Bluetooth in Settings to get the phone into discovery/pairing mode and see if the two will connect.
