Importing Audiobooks, what Bitrate should i use ...

Normally 22.050 kHz would be sufficient for audiobooks so why we can't opt for this even when selecting HE and bitrates under 64 kbps is beyond me. Considering the included "podcast" setting gives...

As for transcoding (or ripping) audio books, I would go with the 64kbps bitrate in iTunes. From my experience ripping a audio book CD, I found that 32kbps mpeg-4 AAC was pretty good but my audio book also contained live speeches. The background noise of the crowd was just terrible, so I ripped at 64kbps and that pretty much solved the problem.

You can still get almost all the Sherlock Holmes books in audiobook form at www.gutenberg.org at 32kbps, 22khz, and the recording is very good, it sounds splendid on my E4Cs. If you have the source files (as you do), you can go even to 16kbps, and as long as you keep the sampling rate high (22khz is fine), you will get very nice sound.

High bitrates appeal to audiophiles, but they are not always better. Keep in mind how your digital audio is going to have to contend with bottlenecks.

Most of the time, I use 32kbps aac files for my audio books on my iPod. This works well for me. You'll need to try for yourself, and see if the quality is acceptable to you...there is a noticable difference from 64kbps. BTW--audible's format 4 is based on 32kbps mp3 files. dordale W weezerisrock New member Joined Oct 19, 2004 Messages 46 Points 0
