The Sports and HDs have the exact same internals (same valving, compression ratios, rebound, etc.). The difference in the 2 is the height of the outer tube, which is to accommodate different spring heights. She assured me that the 2 shocks will have similar ride qualities, but the sport will be slightly stiffer.

sport is a little stiffer than hd, but not a whole lot stiffer. you can useany of theses combinations w/ good results; hd all around this is what a stock 930 comes w/ or sport all around or hd front/sport rear, the thinking for the latter is that …

Sports are for lowered cars. According to the German Bilstein site the sweet spot for the sports is 30-40mm lowering, where the HDs are intended for stock height. I think the DG springs are 20-25mm lower than stock, so you probably could go with either but I think they are closer to the B8 Sport height.

The HD shocks are made to be used with the stock height springs. So if you're lowering the vehicle, get the Sports.

I did look up realoem.com to get PN and looking up in Bilstein catalog points to B4 and B6 models. So HD B6 seems to work with sports suspension settings on 550i 2008. The strange things is that stock, sports and M sport settings all points to either B4 or B6, but none to B8. It seems like then HD B6 would fit for all settings.

Bilstein Sports are about 15% stiffer than the HDs, and are about an inch shorter. The sports series are designed like this for a shorter spring setup. If you do not intend to lower your car, then go with the HD.

BTW, seeing as no one was able to answer my question about the Bilstein HD vs. Bilstein Sport Series, I was able to eventually get the answer on my own. The HD series from Bilstein is for stock springs, or very near stock springs. The Sport Series from Bilstein is to be used with aftermarket springs for lowered applications, higher spring rates ...

The HDs are about 25% stiffer than factory Sport shocks. That's plenty stiff for any street driven car. I have them, I know. They are a great shock. I would not be going out on a limb like this if it wasn't true. Read this, it's Bilstein's own …
