I’m looking to upgrade my PC audio set-up and have as of now narrowed down my selection to the three models mentioned in the post’s title (see AV30, AV40 and MS16). I have an unspectacular if not downright terrible 2.0 speaker system which has been due to be retired for the past several years at least.

I'm looking to buy a set of sub-£100 active 2.0 speakers for listening to music through my computer, and I think I've narrowed my options down to the Behringer MS40 or M-audio AV40, both of which cost ~£90. Reviews suggest the AV40 has more punchy bass, which is a tempting prospect as I listen to a fair amount of bass-heavy music.

I'd probably take the Behringer out of those two. Both get decent reviews, but the AV40 isn't M-Audio's best set. The legendary BX5 D2 would be my choice from their line-up, but they are pretty pricey in comparison. I like the Behringers because they have dual TOSlink (coaxial and optical) switchable, plus analog. A nice set of inputs IMHO.

Fair enough, which one is the best? If you know better ones (up to £100-150 max) then suggest away. Either of these will be used with a computer (but if you suggest other speakers, it doesn't matter if they're passive but be careful about the price) and will mostly be used for Music (70%)...

The Behringer MS40 for $200 (shipping included) on digital out Or The M-Audio AV-40 for $150 (can pick-up at retail location) on analog out Oh and I do plan on getting a sub as soon as I can find a good price/performance sub in Canada for around $200, maybe $250. I love my bass, and I will probably not get bookshelves if I can't get a sub.

M-Audio AV42 Compact Studio Monitor Speakers with 4-inch Woofer (Pair) Best part is that they have their own analog volume control on the speakers, so you can adjust both via the digital input (on your computer), and on the speaker itself. No problems except no remote control. Good sound from small speakers.
