This preamplifier is one of the best preamplifiers I have heard. It is very detailed, without being fatiguing. It has excellent soundstaging and imaging qualities as well. The preamp is very quiet (quite a bit quieter than my old ARC LS-2), and the number of inputs (3 SE & 3 XLR) and outputs (both SE and XLR) is more than adequate.

Lots of Ayre The real strength of the Ayre preamp is contained in its name. The sound was very open, very airy, and very transparent. The soundstage was h-u-g-e and the front to back depth was extremely well extended. The whole soundstage and the performance were so incredibly open, wide and deep. It was almost holographic.

It is a balanced solid state design utilizing very high quality parts and an extremely sophisticated "choked" power supply. The unit is priced at $3,500 w/remote. The sound, ah yes...can you say "air"? Cause thats what you get (clean, clear and pristine).

The challenge for Ayre's Charley Hansen was formidable. Having already designed a world-class preamplifier—the highly acclaimed $7100 K-1 (see Wes Phillips' review in March 1997 )—Hansen set out to offer audiophiles "80 to 90%" of the K-1's sound and build quality at a price more of them can afford. Not that the new K-3 is a piece of "budget" gear.
