S16 is a bit bigger that expected but still within the acceptable compact norm. Volume dial is a bit wobbly but with quite useful and linear volume control. Speaking of volume control, S16 is based on asymmetric design so that headphone section is separated form the analogue output stage - so no pre-amp on analogue outputs.

The only amplifier in Aune S16 was too weak. Otherwise, the DAC section in Aune S16 is excellent. They can compete with much more expensive converters. And I like the sound of AKM. Aune is not some faceless outfit. They are part of the broad China DIY network (hifidiy.net) and they offer very good after sales and support and above else extremely good value for money. You will be quite surprised with the S16 build and component quality. Actually, it should cost much more!

The 560 is much more neutral through this critical range, so the S16 ends up sounding just a little too thin. The X12's more extended bottom end, moist midrange and dynamic capabilities play perfectly with the 560's sound. The extra resolving power of the 560 also shows off the finer details revealed by the X12.

AFAIK the Aune S16 has not been measured by Amir, so I don't know whether it objectively measures well. I have an S16 and I find it sounds very good as a DAC. I would describe its sound as soft and warmish as opposed to analytical. I do not like the S16's headphone amp at all. To my ears it sounds dull and muddy.
