You can work directly with the AudioStreamBasicDescription which is what AVAudioFormat is wrapping, so this should work fine in your case. In the interleaved case this wouldn't work since you would need to also change BytesPerFrame & BytesPerPacket accordingly for the channel count or the ASBD itself would be wrong.
