The Schiit Audio Modi 3 is a great converter made in the USA at the cost of a dinner for two. Asides from its exceptional quality/price ratio, the DAC outperforms its competition. Modi 3 has the classic set of three inputs: Coax, Toslink, and USB port. Its beating heart is the AK4490 converter used in very expensive DACs.

Toslink Optical length? - DAC - Audiophile Style

    https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/8841-toslink-optical-length/
After setting up the system I noticed that I can not stream anything at 24bit/96kHz to the DAC. The display was just flickering 96 and the sound was stuttering but there was no issue with 16bit/44.1kHz files. I did a bit of research and found out that Toshiba, which invented Toslink, set a maximum length of 33feet.

Tosslink was used in the 90s for CD DAT and MiniDisc. It can only go up to 96 kHz 24bit and only works with PCM signals in audio and basic Dolby digital and Dts. USB can transfer anything to any resolution and format. The best way to hear to digital music is to connect your computer to a DAC (or pre/amplifier with a DAC) with a USB printer cable.

DACs with multiple toslink/optical inputs - master list (and any suggestions?) Discussion. I have a fairly standard setup—a 2.0 with a TV and a Chromecast Audio as sources, with an analogue amp feeding passive speakers. The sources are connected with their analogue (headphone) outs to the amp's RCA inputs. This creates two-ish problems.

Oddly, in my searching for DACs for my most recent posts, I came across this thread that digressed a bit to talking about digital S/PDIF vs. toslink. The audiophile discussions about this topic and perceived differences people had perceived prompted a paper entitled, “Is the AES/EBU/SPDIF Digital Audio Interface Flawed?” that was presented ...

Q for JA: Toslink vs Coax - Stereophile.com

    https://www.stereophile.com/content/q-ja-toslink-vs-coax-1
I used the Toslink connection in my review because I was suspicious of the switching power supply possibly injecting RF noise into the common ground shared by the DAC when it was connected by coax. I therefore used a high-quality Toslink to make sure that the grounds were isolated. John Atkinson Editor, Stereophile
