Apple Airport Express - Stereophile.com

Apple Airport Express. I read about this little gadget in one of the recent issues and decided to give it a go. I figured that using my laptop as a juke box would be a fun idea, so I ripped my CD's to an external HDD in Apple Lossless and then off to the new local Apple store. The guy at the store really had no idea what I was talking about.

Why no audiophile Airport Express alternative ...

The Airport Express is a great, inexpensive whole home digital streamer solution -- works with nearly all iOS apps, works with iTunes, etc. But I've discovered that if you want an audiophile experience (yes, limited to 16/44.1 or 16/48, I know, I know), I find that buffering the digital output on the Express to reduce jitter is pretty important.

Usually, a Stereophile "Follow-Up" follows up (duh!) a full review of the component in question. This review, however, is intended to flesh out a cryptic comment made by Wes Phillips in April's "As We See It": "When Apple introduced its AirPort Express wireless multimedia link," Wes wrote, "it even included a digital port so that an audiophile—such as Stereophile's …

Anyways, the Airport Express transmits bit-perfect audio, and an external DAC can resolve any jitter issue. It doesn't get any better than that for 44.1/16. It'd be difficult to justify the price of the Micromega. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Musicophile 7.8k Music Lover blogging about Classical Music & Jazz Posted August 17, 2014

Can a apple airport express be part of a audiophile system? The DAC in the original version of the Apple Airport Express wasn't very good. But Ken Rockwell measured and reviewed the newer 2014 version of the Airport Express and came to this conclusion: "At any price, the Apple AirPort Express is a great DAC. It sounds great, with a completely silent...

theitcynic. · 1y. It's certainly possible, the DAC built into the AirPort Express certainly isn't great, but I've found it acceptable when connected to a receiver/preamp with a digital input. Options like the Bluesound Node 2i and the Yamaha WXC-50 are quite possibly cheaper than an outboard DAC, and are more versatile to boot (supporting ...
