KEF Reference 1 standmount loudspeaker - Hi-Fi+

The Reference 1 is an exceptional standmount loudspeaker with frequency and headroom extensions that put it beyond near-field use. If you want a standmount that delivers LS50 performance in settings beyond the near-field and with deeper bass, the Reference 1 more than justifies its additional price. Venere • 6 years ago

Review: Kef Reference Model One Speaker

    https://forum.audiogon.com/discussions/review-kef-reference-model-one-speaker
The R1s were KEF's early 90s replacement for the much-venerated 104.2s and are, in my view, a superior speaker in every respect. I owned the 104.2s for a time and, frankly, didn't get the hype--they're pleasant enough, but to my ears sounded excessively laid back, lacking in high-end sizzle and low end extension.

The KEF Reference 1 speaker : audiophile

KEF own specs say the r500 has <0.4% distortion down to 120hz, and -3db frequency response down to 46hz. The reference 1 have -3db down to 45hz so nothing too exciting there, but distortion is .2% down to 200hz and <.5% down to 40hz. So I'd expect a much fuller, cleaner sounding speaker than the r500.
