Crown amps are not marketed to audiophiles, they are marketed mostly for sound reinforcement and DJ use, and the very idea turns some audiophiles off. They have features like level controls and fans that audiophiles are adverse to, not to mention "signal processing" and subharmonic synthesizers on the DJ-oriented models.

The Crown amp had done a very credible job of driving his WATT Series II/Puppies. It should. The Crown kicks out an impressive 700Wpc into 8 ohms—even more if it's bridged into mono. And yes, you can hear all that power. The Crown sounds clear, quick, clean (like the Meridian 605s)...and very powerful (unlike the Meridian 605s).

The high-end audiophile sites all seem to say the same thing which is that crown amps are "not suitable" for audiophile use because (presumably) they have poor sound quality. I can get a new one at guitar center by my house for about 1k that's rated at (I think) 600wpc. It's pretty ugy and industrial looking.

The Crown amp is fine. The K2 also accepts banana connectors, but it does not have any RCA type inputs; I use adapters, which are very cheap to buy. I very much like my Crown K2, as it has no fans, so there is no fan noise at all, and …

Crown's first foray into Consumer Audiphiledom would be their PS-Series. They still produce D series for studio use though expensive and doubt they sell very many units. I thought it was in the early 1970's with the IC-150 preamp and both DC150 and 300 power amps.

Other than the very high end stuff which is driven by Levinson equipment, Harman uses crown amps to drive their in-store demo speakers. They sound good and agree that they deliver a big soundstage but they lack detail, particularly in the mid bass and lower bass compared to NAD, Rega or Marantz.

The XLS DriveCore 2 series amps look pretty good for a professional amplifier. The backlight can be disabled in the menu which just leaves two indicator lights that can easily be covered by electrical tape. The Crown K2 is a little dated now but has a clean look.
