Tricky one. The Arcam doesn't have the volume control you need and the Audiolab I suspect won't suit, good as it is - its balance is more or less the same as the 8200. One alternative is Fidelity Audio's DAC-150, which like the M DAC has a very good headphone amp too.

Im wondering how the USB performance of the M-DAC compares to the Arcam rDAC, ifits really worth the extra money as by all accounts the USB on the Arcam is great. I'd also like to know what media players the remote works with aswell, the specs say "Asynchronous USB supporting 24-bit/96kHz with remote control of PC / MAC Media Player via HID ...

The Beresford was only really bought on a whim, and I'm not terribly happy with it plugged into the computer - I don't think it was really optimised for this. I'd like a decent computer-focused DAC with an asynch USB input. I was waiting for the Audiolab 8200DQ, but now I have a lovely pre-amp I don't need or want the Q bit.

the quality of the unit itself is good On the M-DAC plus but I owned an ir dac from Arcam which sound wise I thought it was better sounding and felt I could not justify the extra outlay on the M-DAC plus it just was not a night and day difference to me . the plus points about the M-DAC plus for me were the XLR connections , the better power cord .

Well the Audiolab has a completely different topology than the Arcam for beginners. Toroidal power supply with FIFTEEN different legs for starters, and a MASSIVE amount of discreet Caps for regulation, you have to see the pics of it with the top off, it’s really amazing to see! So initially it has a bit of a different character than the 9038 chip.
