Having owned the Audiolab 8000A series III for a number of years I can give, I hope, a reasonably accurate account of it. I bought it at the time for its accuracy - being partnered with a mildly warm Philips CD850 and mildly forward Tannoy 613's. In reality, it is mildly coloured. Mid range is slightly forward and hi treble is rolled back.

The 8000A is an extremely revealing amplifier and this attribute of it made some say its bright or unpleasant in the upper midrange and treble, especially when used with a low cost or older model CD players. When I "upgraded" to the 8000S, things improved drastically with regards CD playback.

Audiolab 8000A Review - VintageSonics

The 8000A was a truly good sounding amplifier by the early 1990s, with a wide, expansive, and pleasurable sound – albeit not quite as visceral and ‘edge of the seat’ as competitors from Naim, for example. Regardless, it made a lot of friends and is perhaps one of the best-selling amplifiers of the 1980s and 1990s.

This is for the combo audiolab 8000C & 8000P bought used. A few years ago I ,after trying out and owning a nice bunch of amps (many of them british), got my hands om an 8000A mkII, wich then absolutely blew my mind. In my opinion a true performer with excellent clear sound and nice "slam" - given it's price.

Audiolab 8000A/8000P Amplifier This pair of the British amplifiers was not quite "correct" two-block amplifier. And if in reality 8000P is a power amp, the "preamp" 8000A is a complete integrated amplifier which acts in this configuration as a preliminary one.

The Audiolab brand was established on the extraordinary success of its first product, the 8000A integrated amplifier. Back in the early 1980s, this slim unit struck just the right chord with hi-fi buyers – its combination of quality build, sensible features and highly neutral sound proved a massive success.
