The problem I have is whilst using the RCA (Hi Z -10db) outputs into the echo audiofire 1/4" inputs the levels seem to low. I have an option to set the echo inputs to -10dbV (consumer level) and yes this creates good levels, however I want to preserve the best sound quality thus keeping input set on +4dbu (professional level)

If you simply want a replacement for the Firebox that's similar but don't have a desktop try an EMU 0404 USB, Echo Audiofire 4, or Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 (dsp). Those are all in and below your budget. All will be much much better. From what I understand the new Firestudio Mobile might be worth a look. Hope this helps some.

For example, I know the firebox won't work from bus power only on a macbook pro. I got the echo audiofire 4 equivalent which is pretty similar but does work bus powered. If you are looking to do this really seriously, I have heard great things about RME firefaces but they are way out of my budget.
