It's unfortunate that Swan Speakers (HiVi) doesn't do a better job with their sales and service channels in the US, but I would think the latest Swan M200 MkIII would sound better than anything Audioengine or M-Audio produces in the same price range. I'm not sure why Newegg stopped selling Swan's hi-end multimedia speakers.

Can't vouch for the M-Audio's, but I've heard the Audioengine A5's are pretty highly recommended when it comes to cheap powered speakers. It may actually be a lot more worthwhile to pay up for some passive tower speakers …

The reviews of the M-Audio AV-40's are all extremely positive, and at $135, they're not that pricey at all. The Audioengine 5's cost 2.4 times more, but …

Audioengine A5+ ($399) After keeping the LSR305's, I decided to purchase some Audioengine A5+. The LSR305's are more crisp whereas the a5+'s have a warm tone to it. I think they both sound pretty good, but I prefer crisp and the price difference. The a5+'s actually don't get as loud as the LSR305's. They distort at a certain point.

The Audioengine A2+ speaker is an update to the old A2 speaker. What makes it different from the original A2 speaker is an integrated DAC as well as a variable output by which you can easily add a subwoofer. It is a powered speaker which means that it works without an amplifier or a receiver. With its USB audio input, it receives a clean signal ...

level 1. [deleted] · 10y. There is almost no difference as the A5's were damn near perfect to begin with. There is a heat sink, there is RCA input instead of RCA output, there is a headphone-level input on the other speaker. Also, the cabinet internal design and vents have been redone.

Audioengine designs and manufactures everything in the speaker from the ground up — it’s a bonafide audiophile-grade speaker. Recently, in 2018, Audioengine released the A5+ Wireless speakers, which are …

The A5+ have a lot more power and are much more dynamic. The A2+ don't have much sub bass at all and really need a sub to fill in the sound, I imagine the HD3s are similar. I would pass on the HD3 since you already have an Audioengine D1, the extra cost is for the built in DAC and wireless capabilities.
