There may be historic benefits to up or oversampling. Philips's original DACs were 14 bits, 4 time oversampled, which if you do the maths, gets close to 16 bit resolution. Also, when filtering was analogue, it's much easier to avoid cutting into the audio bandwidth with an oversampled signal as the sampling frequency is then four times higher.

Upsampling would give us the same benefits in frequency response that we have gone over, however we can achieve the same effects by sufficiently oversampling our signal both at the DAC and ADC. Upsampling has no effect on our digital filter design problem since all our digital filters are FIR (finite impulse response) and all have linear phase.

Benefits of upsampling/upconverting? | AVS Forum

The benefits of oversampling are usually combined with a feedback loop with a filter in the forward path to create a noise-shaping delta-sigma converter. This pushes quantization noise out of the signal bandwidth, and into other (usually higher, as in a low-pass converter) frequencies.

What are the benefits of DAC's audio output upsampling?

Re: What's the benefits of DAC's audio output upsampling? Reply #3 – 2019-05-13 20:18:16 The output of the DAC must go through an analog filter, and increasing the sampling frequency makes the filter simpler and cheaper.

Upsampling? | Stereophile.com

Upsampling: Take a digital stream that is at one sample-rate and bit-depth and create more slices (higher sample-rate) at a finer bit resolution (more bits = greater bit-depth). This can happen anywhere a designer sees fit to do it. A DAC will automatically adjust to an incoming digital sample-rate/bit-depth up to its internal capability.

I also guess that the benefit of upsampling is for DAC architectures that upsample everything inside the DAC before converting to analog. And it's only a benefit to upsample from your music server, if the music server is doing it more efficiently (i.e. the DAC having to do less upsampling work results in better overall sound quality).

Do better DACs benefit from upsampling the source ...

To me 'upsampling" it is a marketing term attributed to quality, but all it does is change the sound. It doesn't improve it in any implementation I have heard it in. Similar to upsampling a dvd to HD, all it does is shrink the picture to make what you do see higher definition at the tradeoff of less picture real estate.

Theory of Upsampled Digital Audio - MLSSA

    http://www.mlssa.com/pdf/Upsampling-theory-rev-2.pdf
What all successful upsampling DACs have in common is that they allow a small but significant amount of ultrasonic energy through their digital signal chains. This fact is key to understanding why sound quality is improved by upsampling conversion products. The improvement in sound quality is due to the presence of these ultrasonic

Closer to home, more digital audio information than we started with. When we upsample a 44.1kHz 16-bit file to a higher rate and depth, like 96kHz 24 bits, we typically get better sound quality. And since the magic of upsampling just sort of works at the touch of a button, we seem to be getting more for nothing.
