Current Sources, Sinks and Mirrors in Audio

    https://sound-au.com/ism.htm
Introduction. Integral to most amplification systems (including audio), the current source and current sink are indispensable. For the purposes of this article, sources and sinks shall be treated as being the same thing - which they are, depending upon how one views the circuit.

LV NPN CCS: This is a useful current sink for cathode followers or long-tailed pairs where the voltage/power requirements are not too steep. It can also be used in solid state amps as an emitter load for a differential pair or for level shi6ing. You can use very fast, high hfe transistors and get excellent performance.

The CCS is very useful circuit in tube amplifiers even though they are often made with solid state devices. CCS is the short hand abbreviation for Constant Current Source or Constant Current Sink. The two terms are often used interchangeably and it is possible for the same circuit to be a source or a sink depending on the application.

Joined: 01 Jun 2013 3:05 pm. Posts: 1081. I was looking at the LM317 chip circuit diagram, This is a LM317 used in current sink mode cathode load. Looking at the Adjust pin that connects to the 1.25V reference. I was thinking what effect would a Ferrite bead have if fitted over the regulator leg so its on the diode leg in the diagram.

The Current Sink is also designed to have a very low temperature coefficient, so the stage using the Current Sink will sink the same current in the first minute of operation as it will an hour later after the amplifier has warmed to operating temperature.
