Audio-Technica AT-OC5 review – Ters Audio

Comparing the AT-OC5 with master tape, I felt that it made detail seem slightly ‘enhanced’, and the musicians seemed to be too close up. Given those comments, one might expect to find a rather off-beam frequency response, but in fact it looks quite harmless, as the small dip around 20kHz is unlikely to have any major audible results.

Audio Technica AT-OC5? Worth it?- Vinyl Engine

I 've used the AT-OC5 for about an year: to my ears the sound is very good, it has details without fatigue. A little bright but for my old ear this is not bad, I lost sensibility for high frequency. In my set up is very close to the AT-440MLa, same family, same sound.

The AT-OC5 was a definite step up from the AT-410 MM I had been using, but tended to emphasise surface noise and seemed to have a slight 'lift' in the upper treble. Detail retrieval was okay, but resolution of complex performances was poor.

Audio Technica OC5. Out of curiosity, I dug out an old AT OC5 cartridge and mounted it on the SL-1210, this time fitted with the Audio Origami'd Technics arm and a Sumiko headshell. Bearing in mind that I thought it was a bit tired, having been used for several years about 15 years ago, I'm pleasantly surprised at its performance - a bit polite ...

It also has deeper, more substantial bass and a sweeter top than the AT-OC5. I usually load it with 10-20 ohms instead of the recommended 100, I feel it makes the sound more blooming and warm, and slightly larger; although with a slight price to pay on soundstage depth and pin-point focus.

The balance tends toward the analytic—a bit cool-sounding, but with enough warmth to prevent it from being too lean. Its highs are well-balanced, not at all reticent but not overbright or etched. Its dynamics are good, but not spectacular. Its deep bass is clean and solid.
