Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2015 My review is of the older AT4050 CM5 (the older model, made in Japan, features better specifications, a quieter shock mount and a better transformer). Absolutely marvelous microphone. Where as some classic mics were warm but not technically great, this is a mixture of greatness on both sides.

The AT4050 Recorderman track is dry, clean, detailed, and expressive. The high SPL from the snare drum caused no problems. With its onboard -10dB pad engaged, the AT4050’s max SPL is an ear-splitting 159dB. The mics are rated at 17dBA self-noise, which is moderate compared to newer designs (see the lowest-noise mics on the Mic Zeitgeist page).

It is also a fine vocal mic, the very low noise floor making it suitable for distance as well as close miking.

Coincidentally, I asked Audio Technica this very question last week. Here is the response I got: " The circuitry was through hole mounted on the AT4050/CM5 and it used the AT8441 Shock Mount. The circuitry mounting was changed to surface mount and the AT8441 Mount was replaced by the AT8449 Mount and the mic was renamed the AT4050.

But it is industry standard knowledge that Audio Technica is a firm that makes extremely high quality mics for a fraction of the cost of the highest end mics - just like Aphex and their preamps which are so close in sound quality to preamps costing 3x the price (in some cases even bigger, and more brilliant).
