My review is of the older AT4050 CM5 (the older model, made in Japan, features better specifications, a quieter shock mount and a better transformer). Absolutely marvelous microphone. Where as some classic mics were warm but not technically great, this is a mixture of greatness on both sides.

The AT4050 was initially released in the mid-1990s, as the first multipattern condenser in Audio-Technica’s groundbreaking 40 Series. It has remained so popular throughout the past 15+ years that A-T has just released a limited-edition anniversary model, the AT4050/LE, with a beautiful commemorative metallic silver finish and a custom wooden storage case.

The AT4050 ST offers excellent stereo imaging and is a welcome addition to Audio Technica's 4000 series. Although based on the original AT4050, the 4050ST has slightly different characteristics, and it will inevitably be used in different ways — so the original 4050 still has a role, and will, no doubt, retain its disciples.

Audio-Technica: AT4050, AT4040 Reviewed by Scott Craggs. If you read my review of the Shure KSM 141's last issue, you know that I rarely spend my own money on mics. Instead, I rely on the kindness of others for most of my transducing needs. The AT4050 is one mic I did actually buy, and it's been my solitary "good mic" for years now.

Coincidentally, I asked Audio Technica this very question last week. Here is the response I got: " The circuitry was through hole mounted on the AT4050/CM5 and it used the AT8441 Shock Mount. The circuitry mounting was changed to surface mount and the AT8441 Mount was replaced by the AT8449 Mount and the mic was renamed the AT4050.

But I believe I read somewhere in audio technica literature that the 4050 is just a multi-pattern version of a 4033, but I could be wrong. But what I love about my own 4050 is that when you switch to the multi-pattern modes, especially omni-directional- that I can hear a neat effect of my diffusers in my vocal booth.
