Shure M97XE or AT120E cartridge for NE sound | …

The M97xE has a reputation for being smooth, even boring, indeed optimal electrical loading (particularly capacitance loading at 47 k), is important to avoid excessive treble roll off. The AT120ET has an excellent reputation as a real 'toe tapping' cartridge. Here is one enthusiastic review. http://www.mds975.co.uk/Content/vinyl02.html

Nagaoka Mp-110 Vs Shure M97xe And Audio Technica At120e Post by rho » 13 Sep 2011 10:16 I've recently bought a Nagaoka MP-110 and it is very obvious that there is much, much less crackle (ticks and pops) in the sound then when I play the exact same record with a Shure M97xE or Audio Technica AT120E.

The Shure data on requirements for accurate reproduction of 10kHz was 3.5microns (um) or around 0.15mil (end side tip radius). Seems to me that this is a long way from the 0.7mil spherical radius?! or is the issue simply that we are exaggerating the differences... ie: yes they are there but they are somewhat less than claimed?

I've got around thirty hours on my AT120E/B so far. AT recommends 50 hours break in. I like it very much! I decided I didn't want to spend more than $125, which is what I paid for my Shure V15VMR back in 1987. So, Shure M97xe, Ortofon Red, Grado Blue, or this. Took a chance, happy with my choice so far.

AT120e Audio Technica Cartridge. The Audio Technica AT120E/T sounds smoother than the 95e and provides more detail. It does an excellent job of tracking and is not prone to the same inner grove distortion as the AT95e. It is definitely not light years ahead of the AT95e though. The AT120e suits low to medium mass tonearms, which is in ...

For medium-mass arms, the much cheaper Audio Technica AT95E was often considered alongside the M97xE – the AT95E has its own charm, but lacks the big, solid sound of the Shure. The more recent AT-VM95E (replacement for the AT95E) perhaps provides a more viable alternative to the M97xE, offering a touch of warmth with a fairly easy treble ...
