The AT815a doesn't use phantom power - I just tried mine, and it's OK with the "AA", but won't work with phantom power (looking at the schematic, it's obvious…) I wonder if yours is an "a" (un-marked, or an early model, perhaps?) Anyone know what the official difference is between the "a" and the "b"? - Wil jgourd New member Dec 15, 2005 #8

AT897 or AT815B shotgun mics? at DVinfo.net

    https://www.dvinfo.net/forum/all-things-audio/138832-at897-at815b-shotgun-mics.html
I am looking for a decent shotgun mic under $300 for a boom mic for short films. This mic will be used on a boom pole. Browsing B+H, I am seeing the Audio Technica AT897, and then the AT815B for $20 more. The 815 is much longer, and i feel like that would be more helpful with picking up dialogue, but then again I am not an audio person.

Audio Technica's 815b vs. 897 at DVinfo.net

    https://www.dvinfo.net/forum/all-things-audio/43008-audio-technicas-815b-vs-897-a.html
The 897 is definitely a much newer design with a better signal to noise ratio than the 815b. It's also significantly shorter, so getting into the shot when camera mounted would be less of a problem. The 897 pattern would be wider than the 815b pickup. The 897 is more like an update of the 835b. These mics have a mid-level sensitivity and output.
