Now, with the sp-8 in place, that thing is running 8-10 hours a day. When either of us get home, the first thing we do is turn the power on to warm up the preamp. I could go into detail regarding background, soundstage, harmonics, resolution. It's got it all in spades. The funny thing is, my other preamps did too.

I had an SP8 for almost 20 years.The choice of tubes is important.It is a glorified Dynaco PAS III,actually,and it will never sound transparent.Try Mullards for the 12AX7s,and Siemens E83CCs for the 6922s.I tried many many different tubes-and those worked best.I had the MK. After reading all the glowing remarks of the ARC SP6/8/10 series preamps here at AA, I did a crazy thing and picked up through E-bay an SP8 MkII Rev 7 (according to the factory). The unit was in pristene condition including factory maintenance records, schematics, etc.

AudioPhile. Strength: Superaltive soundstage, quick response, non tubey sound yet tubey, 5 cartridge matching positions, etc., etc. Weakness: 1 hour minimum warm up time. Sonics get better the longer the preamp is powered up. I was just browsing at some of the reviews and noticed this review for my SP11 mkII.
