The unit discussed here, the Audio Research SP-6 High Definition preamplifier, was built from 1978 to 1982 in only slightly deviating versions (models A-E), with the exception of the SP-6F version which has been stated to be the SP …

There's quite a few versions of the the Audio Research SP-6 series of preamplifiers: the SP-6, SP-6A, SP-6B, SP-6C, and SP-6E, and it is the Audio Research SP-6B like Ron's that some SP-6 aficionados consider to be the best sounding of the SP-6 series. We have been wondering if an SP-6C type circuit (as in the schematics above) could reach an ...

These (the 6 and 8 series preamps) put Audio Research into a ton of audiophile homes. These are somewhat overly warm but detailed preamplifiers that are wonderfully accurate on voices and most instruments. They are available on the used market at very affordable (by 2020 standards) of about $700. Beats anything else close to that price.

Modified Audio Research SP6 Tube Preamp. In July, 2002 I picked up a 1978 Audio Research SP6 preamp. Here is a photo from the original Ebay ad where I found and bid on it. The unit was in very good condition but badly in need of repair. This preamp had an above average power supply with 11 large twist-lok can capacitors.

Is Audio Research SP-6 considered a good model?

The 6-A was better!! The 6-B was one of the best per-amps ARC made. This was right before the SP-10. After the 6-B ARC came out with the 6-C, 6-E and from then is went down to just good. The "white" sound came into the picture and the flesh and bones of the orchestra and musicians started to fade. The SP-8 is also a better model then the 6-C, 6-E.

In terms of setup and use, the Reference 6 proved a total pleasure. Some old-school Audio Research fans preferred the maze of knobs and toggle switches found on such vintage models as the legendary SP-11, from the mid-1980s, which then cost $5000 (including two-input phono section). But today, with software, so much more can be done more simply ...

Updates to the Audio Research SP 6 | Stereophile.com

Re: Updates to the Audio Research SP 6. Normally you would run whatever sources you wish into the SP6 and then take its tape out feed into any line input on the remote control unit. This would keep the volume control on the S-6 out of the loop. Every source plugged into the SP6 would then be heard on, say, the "CD" input on the remote control unit.
