The REF5 SE is fuller sounding than the REF 3. It has more body and is more fluid, with less grain and a larger soundstage. It is not the equal of the REF40, but is much closer to it than the REF3 or REF5. IMHO paying 1.5K extra for a 5SE is the bargain of the century.

Audio Research Reference 3 Preamplifiers. Clarity, focus, extension, soundstage, imaging, palpability and silence. 20A IEC input makes it difficult to try different power cords. I'll cut to the chase, this is the best preamp I've ever listened to, by far. It doesn't sound tubey, but it doesn't sound like SS either.

The Reference 5 is the best ARC linestage yet, higher in resolution, lower in tube-like coloration, better defined in imaging (though still life-sized) than the Reference 3 it replaces, with much better extension and grip in the bass and the treble.
