I had my PH3SE since about '93 until the end of '18 when I sold it for the Herron VTPH2A. The Herron is not merely better, it is in a whole other realm. The ARC is indeed a fine phono stage. I spent a lot of time doing home auditions with a lot of contenders some even much more expensive and the ARC was easily the best of them all.

While no acute listener will ever mistake the Audio Research Reference for the PH3 or PH3 SE, all three phono preamps are cut from the same basic cloth. That's a good thing—consistency is the mark of a surefooted company. If you object to the PH3's overall tonal balance as being too open, or even bright, you might not like the Ref's sound.

Audio Research Reference phono preamplifier - Stereophile.com

    https://www.stereophile.com/phonopreamps/200ar/index.html
Audio Research's long-promised "final statement" phono preamplifier has finally arrived, and its price is $3500 less than the originally rumored $10,000. That's a pleasant deviation from the audiophile norm, but at $6495, the Reference phono still boasts a steep ticket. That's more than twice the price of the $2495 PH3 SE, AR's previous best—a class sonic act itself.
