The Audio Research LS9 was the choice after extensive research. It is very transparent and does not impose any audio signature that I can detect. The built quality is excellent. Maintenance is a non-issue since it is solid state. I suppose those reviewers who gave bad score to this pre-amp did not use the excellent balanced input/output.

The LS-9 is as close to a "sweet" tube sound as I have ever heard in a solid-state preamp. The LS-9 is very smooth, liquid, and just absolutely correct in its tonality. The soundstage opened up with noticably greater detail in the upper-mid range and a much deeper soundstage.

42 drivers, 13 linear feet and 450 lbs. It should get your attention. The size and scope of the LS9 speaker are serious. It’s ambitious and implies a confident, experienced designer. Very few builder/designers would dive into something this big in scope without knowing that it would be a success. But, ambition doesn’t guarantee success.

Not as good as some single-driver horns, but single-driver horns have limitations that the LS9 don’t. Compared to dipole planars, the LS9’s have superior detail in most situations, depending on power compression of the amp, wall treatments, etc.. I heard plenty of detail from the LS9 that was lost with the various panel speakers I’ve auditioned.
