The LS-25 is a mk.1 with the 6922 tubes. Very good match together with ARC VT-100 mk.2. Wide soundstage, warm midrange. Good dynamics and resolution, but not as good as CJ Premier 16LS and BAT VK-50SE. The soundstage also lacks a little depth compared with the two other.

I compared the ARC LS-25 MKII to the BAT VK-30SE (which I own) at a dealer with the noted associated equipment. I was suprised to hear the difference in the preamps. The ARC was slightly more refined, better bass definition and a lot more dynamic that the BAT.

The LS-25 remote works perfectly, and the unit has been utterly reliable. Also, Audio Research is likely to be around for ever. Over all, a great product at the price point. Much better value than some others in this price range, but not cheap. Certainly not a cost no object effort, but a significant step toward that end at a sensible price.

I borrowed an Audio Research LS2B demo from a dealer and realized that the McIntosh pre-amp was a complete piece of junk (even though I had paid $1,700 for it). When I was done demoing the LS2B, I swapped it for a demo LS22 unit and was completely amazed how better it was even to its LS2B counterpart.

Re: Audio Research LS-22, ? The take I got on Wes' review is that the ARC is a fine preamp with a lot to like, he just liked the CJ more. The ARC is a hybrid type of preamp and probably doesn't have the tube liquidity that an all tube design usually has.
