A 5uf cap into a 68,000 ohm input impedance will have a -3db roll off frequency of 0.46 Hz. That's virtually DC. Lowering the cap value to 1uf will increase the -3db frequency to 2.3 Hz. Not a problem. It could be a problem with a very low impedance amp but the LS2 isn't really designed to drive low-Z loads. A more practical issue is the cost of V-Caps.

This LS2 has some special upgrades, a very good Telefunken ECC88 tube and those two very obvious (in the photos of the interior) high quality .47uF 630 volt coupling caps by Clarity Cap of the UK. Those caps and that tube really kick the performance up a couple of levels, with better frequency response across the range and better sound-staging/imaging.

Read up on line about a modded Ls2. These new caps made the soundstage open up . Imaging was a lot better. Everything that is in the recording is more revealed. The improvement is not subtle. It is huge . These are unbelievable preamps. This one is exrtra special. The cuppling caps have been replaced with Clarity Caps CMR line. ( see photos)

Audio Research is a great name, but I'm happy to say what everyone else is avoiding here. The LS2 is no better than average. Actually, that's overstating. It's actually far worse than average. Changing the tubes, capacitors, wiring etc. won't make it what it isn't. Put the fucker on eBay and watch the lemmings line up.
